Alternative Investment Writing
Investment can be complicated. My job is to make it easier to understand.
For almost two years, I have written investment content for cask whisky ownership brokerage firm Hackstons, covering everything from market performance, pricing and risk to the realities of owning whisky casks. I’ve also used confidential market reports to ghostwrite comparisons between cask whisky and traditional and alternative asset classes, including the FTSE 100, S&P 500, gold, property and Bitcoin.
The work involved digging into market reports, industry research and data, finding the information that matters to the reader and turning it into content that makes sense to everyday investors.
One thing worth noting: accuracy matters. So I’m always careful about how data is presented, the claims being made and what the research can actually tell us.
This is a path in my freelance career that I’m particularly proud of. I genuinely enjoy helping readers understand investment and build their financial knowledge, and it’s an area I’m excited to keep exploring.
Risks and Realities: Making Complex Investment Risks Clear and Accessible
Client: Hackstons
Project: Ghostwriting | Investor education | Research-led content
-
Cask whisky investment comes with risks and considerations that aren't always immediately obvious to prospective buyers.
The brief was to draw on an existing investment report to explain these risks, explore how Hackstons addresses certain concerns and communicate why cask whisky is better approached with a long-term perspective rather than expectations of quick returns.
-
I wanted the article to go beyond simply listing risks.
I developed a new headline, carried out independent research and expanded on the original brief to explore the nuances behind cask whisky ownership.
Drawing on findings from the Cask Whisky Report 2025–2035, I incorporated supporting citations and took a more reflective approach to the subject, looking at what the research meant for prospective buyers rather than simply presenting the findings.
I also wove in Hackstons' relevant services and processes where they addressed particular considerations, balancing the need for transparency with the company's commercial message.

Ghostwritten on behalf on behalf of the Head of Content:
A published, research-led article exploring the risks and realities of cask whisky ownership, including the importance of investment horizons and exit considerations.
The finished piece demonstrates how I approach complex subjects: questioning the brief, looking beyond the obvious and making sure commercial storytelling doesn't come at the expense of clarity.
Cask Considerations: Turning Expert Insights into an Educational Blog Series
Client: Hackstons
Project: Content repurposing | Investor education | Editorial writing
-
Turn Hackstons' Cask Considerations video interviews, featuring the company's co-founder and account managers, into a series of educational blog posts.
The series explores important questions prospective buyers should ask before purchasing a whisky cask, helping them navigate an unfamiliar market and better understand what to look out for.
-
I transcribed the video interviews and transformed the conversations into six standalone blog posts, turning spoken explanations into structured, accessible written content.
I selected key quotes from the co-founder, wrote and edited the copy, and sourced and added supporting imagery to bring each article together.
The aim was to preserve the expertise and personality behind the original interviews while making the information easier to explore, revisit and understand in written form.
-
A six-part educational blog series that extended the original video content into a format readers could explore at their own pace.
The project demonstrates my ability to work with subject-matter expertise, identify key information and shape existing material into clear, engaging editorial content.
-
Create a sponsored article for Farmers Weekly exploring cask whisky as a potential alternative investment for farmers concerned about proposed changes to agricultural inheritance tax relief.
-
The challenge was to introduce an unfamiliar asset class to a new audience, explain its potential appeal and address the risks involved, while adopting a more authoritative, educational tone than Hackstons' usual brand content.
-
I began with desktop research into the proposed inheritance tax reforms, drawing on government and parliamentary sources to understand what the changes could mean for farming families.
Rather than leading with cask whisky, I built the article around an issue already relevant to Farmers Weekly readers: protecting family wealth and planning for the next generation.
From there, I introduced cask whisky as a potential diversification option, drawing connections between tangible assets, long-term ownership and the considerations familiar to agricultural investors.
I also included a dedicated section on investment risks, covering liquidity, due diligence, financial regulation and the absence of guaranteed returns.
The aim was to make an unfamiliar proposition relevant and accessible without overlooking the practical considerations readers needed to understand.

A sponsored article published in Farmers Weekly, introducing Hackstons and cask whisky ownership to an agricultural audience through a topical financial issue.
The project demonstrates my ability to research complex subjects, adapt content for new audiences and balance commercial storytelling with clear, considered communication.
